The order of the Arabic letters
Children learn the Arabic letters in this order, the hija'i order:
ا ب ت ث ج ح خ د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ع غ ف ق ك ل م ن ه و ي
Letters that share a shape sit together, like ب ت ث, so a child learns to tell them apart by their dots.
The Arabic alphabet in English
Every letter has an English name to help you say it: Alif, Baa, Taa, Thaa, Jeem and so on. You see the names under the biscuits in the tray and on every letter page.
Arabic alphabet pronunciation
Tap any biscuit and Thurayya says its letter, slowly. Some sounds have no English match, like ع (Ain) and ح (Haa): listen a few times, then say it together.
The letter game
Hear a letter, then find its biscuit among all 28. Ten rounds, and a star for every right answer. Each letter page has one more game: Catch the letter, among the look-alikes.
Questions parents ask
How many letters are in the Arabic alphabet?
28, from Alif to Yaa. Some books count the hamza (ء) as a 29th letter.
What is the difference between the hija'i and the abjad order?
Same letters, two orders. The hija'i order (ا ب ت ث) puts letters of the same shape together; the abjad order (abjad, hawwaz, hutti…) is the old Arabic order.
How can my child learn the Arabic letters?
One letter a day: hear it together, find words that start with it, then play the letter game. A biscuit makes the letter something a child can see and touch.
Can I hear the Arabic alphabet pronunciation?
Yes. Tap any biscuit and Thurayya says its letter, or tap Thurayya to hear all 28.
